Beverly A. Kemp was a Born Artist, someone who could literally make something out of nothing; such as folding a scrap of Spearmint chewing gum wrapper into a origami bird. Pottery, wood sculptures, weavings made of Rya knots and jewelry fabrication were at the core of her creative output. Beverly taught art to those so young they could barely hold a Crayon and to those who held college degrees. After earning a Masters degree in Art Education from the University of Texas, Beverly instituted an art program for the elementary school in the Manor Independent School District. During the last 20 years of her life, Beverly turned to oil painting including genres that run from sublime, thought provoking images, interfaith inspirational scenes and controversial depictions of American absurdism.
According to Pablo Picasso, ‘Every child is a born artist’. What Picasso failed to say was that not every child stays an artist, the creative urge must be in the DNA.
